I hate Twitter's text limit, but Im going to yap on about my book because I wish people would see it.
Its about two enemies, er not so enemies, they dont know they're each other's enemy. In such a horrible twist of fate was arranged to marry each other, and they had to go through the ups and down of having a "loveless" marriage and ruling a dukedom with no knowledge what so ever. But what happens if they find out they're each other's person they swore to hate and kill with a burning passion. Would that burning passion still be there in the form of, Love?

I'm sincerely very happy for anyone who is enjoying the show but every time I see takes that the show has improved the book characterizations or that the book characters are underdeveloped in comparison to the show...
#our experiences are very different lmao#pjo show crit#sure the show isn't completely out yet#but id argue that the characters (namely the trio) seem way more developed and well-rounded in the book by this point in time (episode 4)#and look im not saying every change the show has made is bad#but by and far there has yet to be a change to characterization that feels like an IMPROVEMENT from the source material lmao#the closest contender I'd say is show Percy does seem a tad angrier than book Percy#but again I wouldn't call that an improvement... its just different and I think that /change/ works because it feels like the same essence#but even that has had some issues because I feel like the show has inadvertently cut down some of Percy's canon book empathy here and there#I think the show has nailed Annabeth's pride and intelligence and her warped worship of her mother#... but they've also made her hyper competent to the point that she's not making half of the mistakes she did in the book#which ISNT good because book annabeth is smart but she isn't infallible#its a big point that she has the theoretical intelligence but none of the real world experience/application#she gets tricked by medusa and goes to visit the Arch just cause she loves architecture and that's okay!! she's twelve and a nerd!#I also dont like that they've cut/toned down her little crush on Luke#actually they've not even showcased the familial bond between annabeth and Luke either in the show so like lmao#and then grover#by now grover's fear of failure and repeating this past mistakes and wanting a license has already been acknowledged in the books at least#in the show?? not so much#and his canon book suspicions and wariness of medusa... were given to annabeth#like medusa in the book was Grover's moment to shine cause his instincts were right!#and in the book fight he even very intentionally attacked medusa#but his highlights there were cut completely in the show#and finally sally#...idk who that is in the show but that's NOT my sally jackson#percy jackson#mine

#book recs#i haven't finished the last one yet but it's been good so far! i really admire these women's resilience and solidarity#some inspiring stories of political activism + insight into aspects of korean history i didn't know about#i wanted to do a half-fiction half-nonfiction list like last year but i've read mostly disappointing fiction this year :(#my favourites were probably kivirähk's the man who spoke snakish & catherynne valente's radiance; though it wasn't as good as orphan tales#i'm reading jacques abeille's les jardins statuaires right now and it's quite frustrating because on the one hand#it's well-written and interesting with original worldbuilding. on the other i'm 300 pages in and there have been#2 female characters. the purpose of both (so far) was to have sex with the male protagonist and only 1 has a name#which makes the read feel less original and more ''same old shit as far as i'm concerned''

currently on ep 2 of the My Lady Jane show and how is EVERYTHINGGGG a glow down. they took every dramatic or funny scene in the book and made it into a regularly paced infodump or horny bait. why are Ethianism no longer protestant and instead just a regular oppressed fantasy animal race. where is my quid pro quo scene of Jane and Edward discussing why G would be a bad husband. where is G getting insanely drunk at the wedding and immediately after transforming, getting stuck in the bedroom for the entire day, while Jane still tries to talk to him regardless. why is Pet the only naked one. they made me look at G's bare ass
#also i don't think g is named g at all he has yet to correct a single person#idk i liked how no one calls him g bc it's stupid so it's nice when he gains friends so they call him that#so far not a single plot point is the same as in the book... the pacing is soooo off... y is this happening#i do have to say that edward and g's actors have their moments of being charming. i like some of jane's expressions too. but that's all the#praise i can give and it's more the actors' interpretation than the script (bc the script SUCKS)#tlj liveblog

Research for an au fic I’m working on: how would Azula act and behave in a modern setting? And I don’t mean re-imagine her character within a modern context and stories. This isn’t Azula, but she’s an overachieving American high schooler with strict and overbearing parents, or Azula, but she’s the soon-to-be CEO of her father’s multinational conglomerate based in Japan or something. No, I mean how would Azula as she is in canon, Fire nation princess and all, act and behave if you simply just took her from her world and plopped her into [insert current year you’re reading this]?
#Like I wanna see what her figure out modern technology so bad#Bro is probably stunned by like microwaves and ovens and fridges and all that#imagine her saying#“How has the fire nation the smartest and most technologically advanced of all the four nations#not yet figured out the limitless potential of being able to reheat your food thus making it edible and enjoyable once again?!”#wanna see her throw an iPhone at a wall because she received a text message#and has no idea why the magical black box is all of a sudden directly communicating with her#Like the potential for comedy is endless#But also more seriously what would she make of our modern social and political problems?#And our art?#Imagine she if listened to our music? Or Watched our movies and TV shows or read our literature#it’s said in canon that she enjoyed reading a lot as a young child and spent a lot of time combing over the royal palace’s archives#Imagine her stumbling upon a modern library#She’s always been a lover of history#so I can just imagine with piles of books trying to cram our entire recorded history like she’s revising for an exam#What kinds of introspections and reflections would she have#learning about all the horrible atrocities we committed throughout history in the name of a culture or an individual or an idea?#How would she compare and contrast it all to her own upbringing and everything she was taught about her world?#Oh and the internet of course#I feel like she would go into a comatose state discovering the internet#avatar the last airbender#atla#atla au#azula#princess azula#atla azula

Are you perhaps going to add Bill's evident medical trauma into the story?
Bill's been getting called insane for seeing the third dimension by his mom since chapter 15 and I've mentioned his vision is tied to a medical condition he was born with. We were already going there.
Only difference is now he's going to an optometrist in addition to an orthopedic doctor.
#(I forget if he's directly mentioned he has a medical condition in the fic yet or just danced around it)#(99 percent sure he's said this vision is something you're either born with or not)#(anyway I've written a ton of out of fic posts about his medical condition—possible genetic origins—how it works—how it's seen culturally—)#(so yeah this has been the plan since. probably like May last year?? May or June?)#(since before I wrote the post on non Euclidean new age cults)#(if his homeworld actually is named Euclidia calling his geometry non Euclidean is gonna retroactively be so funny)#(it's the correct term but that makes it funnier)#anonymous#ask#bill goldilocks cipher#the book of bill spoilers

Angelberga was a peculiarly prominent personality in manifold aspects of European politics [in the late 9th century. Born to the Supponid family of Italy, she married Emperor Louis II and had several opportunities to establish her position as an active and controversial player in the vicissitudes of her husband's reign]. She acted as Louis's regent, accompanied him on expansionary military campaigns in the south of the peninsula and represented him at [congresses, tribunals, and diplomatic negotiations]. Strikingly, she was also the beneficiary of a spectacular collection of charters. Almost one in seven of Louis II’s extant charters were issued in her favour. Angelberga’s conspicuous exploits in the field of charter acquisition did not diminish after the emperor’s death, and this helped her to maintain a position as a key power-broker in Italian politics, control of land [particularly monastic foundations] being a fundamental building-block of power in this period. In the interregnum following 875, during which Charles the Bald of West Francia and Karlmann of Bavaria fought to claim the succession to the heirless Louis, Angelberga herself conducted the negotiations and decided the loyalty of a major sector of the Lombard political community. She maintained this high profile until her death [having supported her son-in-law Boso's quest for power, endured a temporary exile, maintained the support of Pope John VIII, and founded the monastery of San Sisto in the city of Piacenza, where she probably ended her days sometime before 891].
-Simon MacLean, "Queenship, nunneries and royal widowhood in Carolingian Europe"
#historicwomendaily#angelberga#Louis II of Italy#Italian history#Carolingian period#9th century#my post#Angelberga is wildly fascinating to me#She's been described by numerous historians as 'the most openly powerful of the Carolingian royal wives' (Fiona M. MacFarlane)#'The first Carolingian royal woman to take a fully public role in government' (Phyllis G. Jestice) etc#In many ways this is dependent on the Carolingian paradigm of royalty which differed from its Merovingian predecessors#and which saw queens conducting their activities on a primarily domestic/spatial level#with significantly reduced indicators of autonomy and oddly obscured importance/influence in contemporary sources#(That didn't necessarily mean a reduction in importance - just a shift in what that importance actually meant and should contribute to)#In that framework Angelberga's wide-ranging public activities do seem to have been the 'exception'#It's all the more notable considering the fact that she never had a son#Which is yet another thing I find very interesting with her - how her lack of a son affected various spheres and events of her life#Predictably contemporaries and chronicles viewed her as a controversial figure who was arrogant and insolent and sexually transgressive#(shocker)#also her name has many spelling variants in sources and history books - I'm using Angelberga to make it consistent#and because it was how La Rocca (the first historian whose work of her I read) referred to her

Good adaptations aren't scene by scene, line by line reenactments of a book. It's a completely different medium, that the creators can use to tell the story a different way. Besides budget issues (just writing a scene where a bunch of crazy stuff happens costs about $0, while portraying it on screen is a different matter), the pacing/flow is different in live action stuff than books.
The SPIRIT of the adaptation is what matters. The original PJO movies weren't bad because Annabeth's hair was brown or they didn't say the dialogue straight from the book or dare I argue, because they mixed in elements from further in the series. Rather, it was bad because the vibe was simply far too edgy. Percy was sassy, it did have humor, monsters were fine, but it fell flat on its face because it didn't understand its characters, its world, or its TONE. THE TONE. It was genuinely awful.
Good adaptations expand on the source material without losing the charm of the original. They understand what makes characters tick and what's at the core of the journey, its not about aesthetics or being faithful to the point of being dull and having nothing new to say.
The PJO series is doing that. Having Rick involved probably helped a lot. It has a rocky start, in my opinion. But from the second half of ep. 2 and into ep. 3, I see it gaining its footing.
#percy jackson#pjo#percy jackson tv show#look i used to think the book was basically the script and that it's supposed to be super faithful or it goes in the trash#i understand people being upset about certain things not showing up#(WHERE THE HELL IS ARGUS IM SJDHYSHSB)#but that's not what matters (and the series isn't even over yet)#there's some good stuff here#the trio is good#the characterization is hitting#the worldbuilding is chef's kiss so far#most changes make sense or at least don't derail the story#my opinion may change but so far this is such a good adaptation. i truly feel as though im in this demigod world#okay also to add on to the tone part...#small things in the PJO movies sent me off a ledge#when Percy has his headphones in instead of paying attention to Chiron at the beginning#asking for Annabeth's name from the moment he sees her#the whole Lotus Hotel scene#the Hades/Persephone scene#the weird thing between Grover and Persephone or something?? i kinda forget#that and other stuff obvs builds up#they treated PJO as just a story that hits all the beats and tropes of a teenage slightly edgy adventure movie when it's not that#like it's so very painfully 2000s movie shit#(which is fine on its own but not as an adaptation)#anyway#I can't be here all day

Do you have any thoughts on what Meilin’s mother was like? She’s such a source of untapped potential in canon. What happened to her spirit animal? Does General Teng share stories about her with Meilin? Do she and Abeke bond over losing their mothers at such a young age? I feel like she’s one of the many many things the authors forgot about :(
Yes! I agree, we really missed out on learning about Meilin's mom. I haven't developed her too much yet, but I'll tell you what I do know.
I currently have her name as Qianyue (骞月), but that is subject to change. Her spirit animal was a yellow-throated marten named Sujia. She was only twenty years old when she died giving birth to Meilin.
Qianyue did not get the chance to become a Greencloak, as her betrothal to Teng was arranged quite soon after her Nectar Ceremony. She was no warrior, conforming to what Zhong expected of women in that period, but Meilin desperately wishes she knew her. Everything she knows about Qianyue came from General Teng and her maternal grandparents. They told her she was clever and artistic but solitary, spending long hours in the garden of their mansion with Sujia by her side, lost in her own thoughts. With the guidance of her Marked parents, Qianyue spent much time working on her bond, too, learning to channel Sujia's speed and agility. Had her circumstances been different, she could have made a fine Greencloak. Teng always expressed that he loved her deeply, and she him, and Meilin doesn't doubt that -- but she sometimes wonders if her mother felt unhappy in her life. Married so young, unable to choose her own path, and on her deathbed five years later. It's not a life Meilin would have wanted.
Sujia survived the initial loss of her human partner and lived in agony for several more years. She was allowed to roam the family mansion freely and wanted for nothing in terms of comfort, but she never found peace. She retreated into herself and, over time, started to act more like a common animal. Finally, when Meilin was six, she refused all food and fasted to death. Meilin's memories of her are hazy, but she remembers being very little and sitting with her as she gazed wistfully into the garden where Qianyue used to walk, stroking her fur, encouraging her to eat with offerings of fruit, asking her what her mother was like. Sujia, of course, couldn't reply. When she died, it devastated Meilin. Sujia was her closest connection to her mother, and it felt like Qianyue was dying all over again.
Meilin grieves for her mother in a strange way, given that she never knew her, and that she herself was the cause of her death. That's a fact that has always been difficult for her to reckon with, even if she knows it was not her fault.
The nature of Qianyue's death has shadowed Meilin her whole life. It has left her with a fear of pregnancy and childbirth, and is one of the reasons why she and Rollan decide to adopt in adulthood.
#thanks for this ask it made me think ab her some more#the idea that meilin's mom would have joined the greencloaks if not for her family's legacy is something that hurts me deeply#i honestly haven't decided on teng's given name yet so he's staying “general teng” for the time being#fun fact: qianyue's spirit animal has gone through several different species in the time i've been reading these books#first it was an alligator (couldn't tell you why)‚ then a corsac fox#i eventually decided on the yellow-throated marten. such a beautiful animal#small but not at all harmless. which is important bc meilin likely would have been kinder to jhi in the early books if her own mother#had summoned a gentler species herself#in fact i imagine that all of meilin's marked ancestors summoned fierce predators#adding to her disappointment in jhi#text#asks#a revised history of erdas#spirit animals#spirit animals books#spirit animals series#meilin#qianyue#sujia#general teng#rollan#jhi#tw death in childbirth
